Remembrance Sunday Arrangements 2023 for Barnard Castle

Barnard Castle Town Council, in association with St Mary’s Parish Church, are coordinating arrangements for the local Remembrance Sunday Service on 12 November 2023.

A church service led by Rev. Canon Alec Harding will take place at St Mary’s Parish Church, Newgate

The service will start promptly at 10:58 am. The congregation must be seated in church by 10:40 am, at the latest, to allow the Two Minute Silence to be observed at 11:00 am.  Individual timing and seating arrangements in church for both standard and wreath bearers will be communicated separately to those taking part.

There will be a temporary road closure order in effect from 11:30 am until 12:00 (noon). This will cover Newgate at its junction with Market Place/The Bank, facing east (out of town), Birch Road at its junction with Newgate, and Westwick Road immediately to the east of the entrance to The Bowes Museum, facing west (into town). During this time, the road will be closed to all traffic, including pedal and motorcycles, with the exception of access for emergency vehicles.  Pedestrians, including those involved in the parade, must remain on the pavement until 11:40 am, when the road is officially closed.  Whilst it is appreciated that this can be frustrating, residents’ co-operation is appreciated.

Following the church service at St Mary’s, the Parade Marshal will lead the annual parade along Newgate to the war memorial in the grounds of The Bowes Museum for a further Act of Remembrance and laying of wreaths, commencing at approximately 11:50 am.

During the further Act of Remembrance, there will be an opportunity for anyone to individually pay their respects and lay either a wreath or place a cross or marker dedicated to a family member or someone to whom they are close.
